Motivation

I have always wanted to understand how things work. As a teenager, I thought that an integrated analysis of quantum mechanics, astrophysics and consciousness was the only thing I could do to make me happy because I just loved thinking about the world around me.

In my junior year of high school, a friend of mine was murdered and it was very hard on me. I dropped out of school and did not talk to many people for about a year. Instead of continuing my progress towards joining the Air Force Academy (I was valedictorian in the International Baccalaureate Program at my school), I sank into myself and struggled to regain happiness. The loss of my friend made me realize that nothing can possibly compare even minutely to the value of every living person on this Earth. I knew that there were tons and tons of people who I could just as easily have been good friends with but that I just had not met them yet. When I went back to high school for my final year, I met Marlin with whom I trained "like a monster."

After high school I joined the Navy for 6 years, the last couple of which I was the supervisor for reactor chemistry and radiation control. It was during the first year of my time on the carrier that my physician noted that my cholesterol and blood pressure were very high and I needed medication. I improved my diet dramatically and did not need medication within 4 months, and simultaneous to this my gym performance skyrocketed.

The combination of my profound experience with the loss of my friend in high school and the profound experience of the impact of proper nutrition on my health and performance served as my initial motivation to
1. Help all people
2. Help them in the area of nutrition & health

Literally, I want to help people make better decisions in their day so that the body supporting their brain will keep their brain alive for their loved ones as long as possible. When I say brain I actually mean your thought process and your emotions; the stuff that makes you YOU. The stuff that will make your family and friends miss you when you are no longer there. Reducing the time that you aren't there, and increasing your energy and quality of life when you are, is my goal. By "you" I mean both the you that is reading this right now as well as the collective you of everyone in society.

I am upset that the government has not provided sufficient guidance in nutrition, that the food and supplement industry uses false but legal advertising to influence poor eating decisions in the public, and that scientists do not put out more effort to make their research results as they are relevant to human health more known in the general public.

For example:
Does the public know what the most important nutrition is for cancer prevention?
Does the public know what types of carbohydrates cause obesity and which don't?
Do we know what energy bar or other product is better to buy based on facts, not ads?
The answer to these and thousands of other questions is generally "no." We can't all read the scientific literature and those who are publishing that literature do not have a lot of time to make their research results useful to the general public. This is very sad because it means the public's health is reduced and the effective value of the scientific work is reduced.

I am excited to improve the effective value of the scientific community by helping the public understand and use their
work. My background in research and teaching facilitates my doing this.
